Dwarka Dham, Somanth, Nageshwar Jyotirlingas in Gujarat From Mumbai | Complete Itinerary, Map, Tour Packages, Information

Jyotirlingas of Gujarat

Shivji’s favorite month, the auspicious month of Shravan is ongoing and this year, I was blessed to visit 2 Jyoirlingas in Gujarat along with my husband. Last year, this time, by Shivji’s grace we visited Kashi Vishwanath togther and this year, it was Dwarka plus the two Jyotirlingas of Gujarat (Somnath and Nageshwar Jyotirling)… not that I count but it does give me the immense feeling of blessedness and closeness to Lord Shiva that He calls, perhaps He remembers and this feeling is humbling as well.

We first reached Devbhoomi Dwarka and after taking the darshan of Dwarkadhishji, we hired a rickshaw for Nageshwar Jyotirling. Guess what? It was the first Monday of Shravan, and how?! We really never planned it this way!

THE SPIRITUAL CIRCUIT OF DWARKA AND NAGESHWAR, SOMNATH JYOTIRLINGS IN GUJARAT - AN INTRODUCTION:

Shivji Jyotirling Dham Gujarat Dwarka Somnath Tour

The spiritual circuit of Dwarka and Nageshwar, along with the revered Somnath Jyotirlinga, forms a sacred pilgrimage route in Gujarat, attracting devotees from across the country. Dwarka, one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites, is believed to be the ancient kingdom of Bhagwan Shri Krishna, where the grand Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as Jagat Mandir (Universal Shrine) or Trilok Sundar (the most beautiful in all the three worlds) stands as a testimony to the fascinating legacy of Shri Krishna and the many tales of Mahabharata.

Nearby, the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga is revered as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, signifying divine protection from evil forces. Further south, the Somnath Jyotirlinga in Prabhas Patan is regarded as the first and most significant of the Jyotirlingas, embodying Lord Shiva’s eternal presence. We were pretty excited for our Gujarat yatra covering this circuit because it not only holds immense religious significance but also offers a glimpse into India's rich spiritual heritage, making it a profound journey for devotees like us seeking divine blessings and inner peace. Also, the entire circuit is nearby and well connected by rail, road and bus which makes it highly doable and very conveniently at that.

On the Dhandhuka - Vallabhipur Highway, around 120 kms from Ahmedabad is an ancient temple dating back to the Mahabharat Era. The history of the temple goes back to as long as 5500 years and according to the locals, pandavas had stayed here during their vanvaas. The Shivling here is installed by Bhim himself who had done so to break his fast.

There is a Annakshetra inside the temple as well where, thanks to a local lady who was sitting there, warmly invited us over for food as it was lunch time.

Other temples on the way include a Shaktipeeth Chamunda Mataji Temple, Chotila which has some steps to climb, so you have to plan accordingly. We had to miss that and prayed from our cars itself since we were running short in time.

DAY 3: REACH DWARKA - DWARKADHEESH TEMPLE - GOMTI GHAT - RUKMINI TEMPLE.

DWARKADHEESH TEMPLE:

The Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir needs no introduction. One of the most revered Hindu temples dedicated to Shri Krishna, the temple is located in Dwarka, Gujarat, and is a part of the highly revered Char Dham Yatra. The temple stands as a symbol of devotion and faith, attracting millions of devotees every year.

Dwarkadheesh Temple Gujarat Dwarka Somnath Tour

The temple has been originally built over 2,500 years ago by Vajranabha, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna. However, the current structure was reconstructed in the 15th–16th century after being destroyed multiple times. It is a magnificent five-story structure, supported by 72 intricately carved pillars, and stands at about 51 meters high. The entire temple is spellbinding and even a glimpse is enough to humble you. The Shikhara (spire) is adorned with a flag that is changed five times a day and is visible from miles away.

According to the puranas, Dwarka was the golden kingdom of Lord Krishna, which he ruled after leaving Mathura. It is believed that after Krishna’s departure from the mortal world, the city was submerged into the Arabian Sea. Archaeological findings suggest remnants of an ancient underwater city, supporting the stories.

Climbing the famous '56 steps to Moksha' and entering Dwarkadhish Temple through the Moksha Dwar on a full moon night which was an enchanting experience. The temple, bathed in moonlight, created a divine aura, with the Arabian Sea in the background. Of course, the temple was crowded, the night arti was soon to begin but the chanting added to the spiritual charm, making it a truly mystical and unforgettable experience.

GOMTI GHAT:

The Dwarkadheesh Temple overlooks the entire stretch of Gomti Ghat which adds to the charm of the sacred tirth. The ghat is lined with small temples dedicated to Lord Krishna, Maa Gomti, Lord Shiva, Sudama and a very old Sun temple right at the confluence of Gomti River and the Arabian Sea.

Pilgrims take a holy dip in the river to cleanse their sins before visiting Dwarkadhish Temple. The serene vibes, gentle waves which can roar during high tide, along with the temple in the backdrop create a divine and peaceful atmosphere, especially during sunrise and sunset. There are lots of small shops selling religious paraphernalia and diya baskets which you can float in the waters - adds to the magical experience of this sacred place.

RUKMINI TEMPLE:

Your trip to Dwarka in incomplete without visiting this temple. The Rukmini Devi Temple, located 2 km from Dwarkadhish Temple, is dedicated to Goddess Rukmini, the chief queen of Lord Krishna. According to puranic story, Sage Durvasa once cursed Krishna and Rukmini to be separated from Dwarka and for the region to suffer water scarcity. As a result, Dwarka has salty water, and till date, devotees offer water at Rukmini Temple to seek blessings for their family.

DAY 4: EXPLORING OTHER TEMPLES OF DWARKA (NAGESHWAR, BEYT DWARKA, GOPI TALAV) + LEAVE FOR SOMNATH

Nageshwar Jyotirling

Nageshwar Jyotirling is around 18 km from Dwarka city and lies on the route between Dwarka city and Beyt Dwarka island on the coast of Saurashtra. On the way to Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, which is located in a forest called Daarukavan, it started to rain very heavily raising apprehensions of us making it for the darshan owing to blocked roads. The entire journey to the Jyotirlinga was nothing short of a test with continuous heavy downpour and the constant trepidation of whether we were going to make it or not.

Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, Gujarat

Finally, we reached and with a loud chant of Har Har Mahadev, we thanked the Lord for making this happen. There is a large statue of Shivji at the entrance of the temple. The temple is really popular with the shiv bhakts because of the belief that a darshan here can protect you from all poisons – both physical and mental.

BET DWARKA:

Bet Dwarka, an island 30 km from Dwarka, was the residence of Lord Krishna during his rule. Earlier, it was only accessible by a boat but now there is a Sudarshan Setu (earlier known as Signature Bridge) that connects Okha to Bet Dwarka, making it possible to reach Bet Dwarka by road as well.

Sudarshan Setu Gujarat Dwarka Somnath Tour

According to puranas, Sudama, Krishna’s childhood friend, visited him here with a humble offering of poha (flattened rice), which was all he could afford. Despite his wealth and divine stature, Krishna humbly accepted the simple offering of poha with immense love and respect. The temple today stands as a testament to this very message that true devotion and humility are valued far more than material wealth.

GOPI TALAV:

Gopi Talav is a sacred pond located near Bet Dwarka, about 5-6 kilometers awayGopi Talav is believed to be the place where the Gopis (Krishna's devotees) performed bhajans and dances in devotion to Krishna.

MOOLA DWARKA:

Moola Dwarka was the original city built by Bhagwan Shri Krishna when he established his kingdom after leaving Mathura. The site is believed to have been submerged in the sea after Krishna’s departure, making it a mystical and sacred location. Visitors to Moola Dwarka can explore the ruins of temples and structures, believed to be remnants of an ancient city.

DAY 5: SOMANTH DARSHAN + EVENING LIGHT AND SOUND SHOW

Somnath Jyotirling, Veraval.

We reached Somanth by train and after checking in our hotel VITS The Somnath Gateway, we set out for the majestic Somnath Jyotirlinga which is the first to have emerged amongst all the Jyotirlingas.

Somnath Jyotirlinga, Gujarat

The honey colored temple is magnificent with a striking shikara (spire) which is 50 m tall. The temple paints a striking picture of strength and resilience as it has been invaded 17 times by Mahmud Ghazni for its wealth and splendor. Sea winds ruffled in my hair and peace washed over my soul as I wandered around the large complex of the temple which almost touches the sea shore. In those moments of calm, it was hard to imagine the gruesome destruction the temple has faced in the past.

There is a light and sound show in the evening which showcases the entire history of the temple in a lively, engaging manner but it was closed due to the rainy season.

DAY 6: OTHER TEMPLES OF SOMNATH (OLD SOMNATH TEMPLE, HINGLAJ MATA GUFA, SHREE KRISHNA CHARAN PADUKA, BALDEV JI GUFA, RAM MANDIR, GEETA MANDIR, BHALKA TEERTH, TRIVENI SANGAM, BAN GANGA)
